Summer at the sea with Usharik

In the summer of 2023, the annual summer offsite auditory-verbal rehabilitation program “Summer by the Sea with Usharik 2023!” took place.

From June 26 to July 1, on the grounds of the “Feya-3” resort in Krasnodar Krai, children with hearing impairments gathered for a week of learning, fun, and social interaction.

Summer Rehabilitation 2023

For 14 years, Usharik has brought together children from various regions and even countries for summer auditory-verbal rehabilitation. This year, families from all over Russia participated, including newcomers from Yakutsk and other regions.

The summer intensive course was organized collaboratively by the Krasnodar Regional Public Organization of People with Hearing Disabilities (KROOLOVS) “Sounds of Life” and the Parents’ Association “I Hear the World!”.

Highly qualified and experienced specialists worked with children daily at the guesthouse.

The main goal of the program is a person-centered approach, taking into account each child’s individual abilities: speech development, hearing function, and level of auditory perception. Each child works at their own pace, receiving tailored support.

In many regions, there are no specialists experienced in working with hearing impaired children, so summer offsite rehabilitation is a unique opportunity for parents to receive guidance for home work with their children and for children to have professional sessions with the best teachers.

For children, the program primarily helps improve auditory-verbal skills, develop communication abilities, and make new friends in a safe and understanding environment.

For parents, it is equally important: they connect with other families, share experiences, exchange advice, and receive support.

The rehabilitation program lasts one week and consists of productive and engaging activities:

- individual speech therapy sessions

- individual auditory-verbal therapy sessions

- music lessons

- creative workshops

- fitting of hearing aids/cochlear implants

- “School for Parents”– daily lectures from the teaching staff

During the 7-day program, specialists conducted individual sessions to develop speech production and auditory skills in children of different ages. Each child received a progress card, documenting evaluations, progress, and recommendations for further auditory-verbal development. A motivational reward system*was used, making participation enjoyable for all children.

“This was my third time participating as a specialist in the summer offsite rehabilitation. The first time was in 2013 in Anapa, then in 2014 in Golubitskaya. It was exciting to see children I met years ago now grown into teens, and to witness their speech and hearing development!" told Margarita Pershina, the surdopedagogue, Yekaterinburg. “I saw well-socialized children who are talented, successful among their peers, and do well academically. This confirms that summer rehabilitation for children with hearing impairments is both important and necessary.”

She continued: "For parents, especially those newly facing a diagnosis of profound sensorineural hearing loss, meeting families who have navigated this journey, seeing results, and exchanging experiences with specialists helps them move from acceptance to action. For children, interaction with peers in a group and individual sessions fosters social communication and confidence. For specialists, the program provides valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge and maintain professional connections."

“School for Parents”

Every day, teachers organized lectures for parents, which were particularly useful for families from small towns. After each lecture, specialists replied parents’ questions.

Fun Activities

Creative workshops

Children had free time to swim in the pool, the water park, and the sea, as well as to socialize with other participants. Parents also connected with each other, sharing experiences and advice.

Animation and Entertainment

Songs, dances, contests, and prizes awaited every participant. Characters like Cruella and Dracula created unforgettable experiences, while cotton candy and gifts added a sweet touch to the productive vacation.

Usharik’s Birthday

During the program, Usharik’s birthday is celebrated with great joy. Children hug, talk to, and celebrate with Usharik.

Final Concert

The program concluded with a concert where each child showcased their talent reading poems, singing songs, dancing, and more. Saying goodbye is always difficult, as the week was full of unforgettable moments and emotions.

A great opportunity to combine family rest at sea and training with leading specialists in the field of cochlear implantation.

In the summer of 2023, the annual summer offsite auditory-verbal rehabilitation program “Summer by the Sea with Usharik 2023!” took place.

In the summer of 2022, the annual off-site summer auditory-speech rehabilitation program “Summer by the Sea with Usharik 2022!” took place.

Fr om 13 to 21August 2017, dozens of families wh ere children with hearing impairments are brought up, left for the Black Sea in the resort village of Shirokaya Balka.

Almost fifty families from different regions of Russia, raising children with hearing loss, including - after cochlear implantation rested, played and studied with Usharik on the Azov Sea from 8 to 18 July.

This summer, as in the past, we went to one of the sunniest and most hospitable cities in Anapa.

This year, summer for 200 people from different regions of the Russian Federation has turned orange!

On-site rehabilitation "Away from the sea with the whole family!" - 2012 became the most numerous in the history of summer trips.

In 2011, the summer rehabilitation session was held in two shifts: the first from 10 June to 23 June, the second from 24 June to 5 July.

This is a good tradition, supported by both professionals and parents and their children. The number of participants this year has grown in 3 times. There were already friends among parents and specialists, who had become friends in the previous trip, but the most joyful thing was the meetings of children. For a year everyone have grown, have reached new heights. The new children very easily and harmoniously joined our warm team, they made new friends, so that they did not want to part with.
