Happy Surgeon’s Day!

We would like to extend our gratitude to surgeons for their commitment and unwavering willingness to help patients and colleagues. We also wish them optimism and success in all their professional and creative plans.

Today we celebrate the Surgeon’s Day. It’s worth noting, that Russian surgeons didn’t have their professional holiday. Everything changed in 2014, when the Russian Society of Surgeons established their own holiday on the last Friday of November.

Why this date?

Because I.N.Pirogov – an anatomist and a pioneer of the Russian military field surgery was born on November 13, 1810 according to the Old Style (i.e., around the last Friday of November in the New Style).

Thanks to Nikolai Ivanovich surgery became a science, that is not merely a method, but a scientifically validated method. Information about this discovery, as well as other findings by the scientist, can be found in his two-volume manuscript “Questions of life. Diary of an old physician”. The manuscript, along with all of the specialist’s paper-based legacy, is preserved at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy in Saint Petersburg.
