During the discussion, issues of medical, technical, psychological-pedagogical and social assistance to children with hearing impairment were touched upon.

Discussion

Director of the Research Institute of Ear, Nose, and Tongue, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the National Medical Association of Otorhinolaryngologists Yury Yanov, St. Petersburg occupies a leading position in the field of rendering assistance to deaf and hard of hearing people. Annually, the institute conducts thousands of operations to restore hearing. Today, this is the only specialized institution in Russia that deals with problems of otorhinolaryngology and speech pathology. By the number of cochlear implants and the volume of postoperative rehabilitation of patients, the Institute ranks first in Russia and the third in Europe.

Sergei Artiushkin, the chief freelance specialist and otorhinolaryngologist of St. Petersburg Healthcare Committee drew the attention of the round table participants to a number of problems related to the treatment of hearing ailments. Today in St. Petersburg, live 12,000 children who have auditory diseases. The lack of the ability to hear leads to a disruption in the development of all the mental processes of the individual: speech, memory, and thought.

Modern methods of diagnosis can detect diseases of the hearing aid in a child at an early age. This problem is successfully solved with the help of the newest methods of medical and technical assistance: patients are being treated with cochlear and stem-brain implants. However, with the use of high-tech methods, treatment may be ineffective due to the lack of sardological pedagogical and social rehabilitation.

Experts acknowledge that the installation of a hearing aid or implant is one-fifth of the entire work on hearing restoration. Postoperative support of the patient and his family is necessary: to conduct classes with the faculty for the adaptation of the child, the development of his auditory perception, speech, thinking, motor skills, communicative and social skills.

The participants of the round table emphasized that the use of modern surdopedagogical technologies is the most important component of the complex medical, technical and pedagogical approach to hearing restoration. Today, such assistance is provided in the Children's City Surdocenter, in the Institute of Ear, Nose and Throat, at the RSPU. A.I. Herzen, in specialized kindergartens, commercial and private centers. However, in St. Petersburg, there is an acute shortage of surdologists and surdo-pedagogists. This makes it difficult to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate children with hearing impairment. Specialists also noted that it is necessary to develop an algorithm for the interaction of the surdocenter and educational institutions (correctional and mass kindergartens). This will ensure continuity in the work of the rural center with young children and educational institutions.

As a result of the round table, it was decided to create an interdepartmental working group to develop proposals for improving the child's audiological service. The group will include members of the permanent commission on social policy and health of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, the Committee on Education, the Committee for Education, the Committee on Social Policy, the Territorial Fund of CHI, specialists of the Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose and Speech, A.I. Herzen, as well as rehabilitation centers.
